45,000th Terminal Tractor Built in the US
For 50 years, customers have relied on Kalmar's purpose-built terminal tractors to move trailers at ports, intermodal facilities and distribution centres. Regarded for their excellent durability, operator comfort, service ease and latest generation engines featuring the cleanest in engine technology, the 45,000th unit recently came off the assembly line at Kalmar's US manufacturing plant in Ottawa, Kansas. The milestone machine will be delivered as part of an order from Parsec, Inc, the intermodal division of Cincinnati-based O/B Leasing.
Parsec (www.parsecinc.com) is one of North America's leading providers of contracted terminal management services. In the last 10 years, Parsec has taken into operation hundreds of Kalmar terminal tractors, further solidifying Kalmar's position as the preferred supplier of trailer spotting machines to the intermodal market.
Randy Dennis, VP, Kalmar Sales and Marketing, says Kalmar is the leader in all terminal tractor market segments because it offers the ultimate in machine reliability backed by the support of the industry's most extensive dealer network. He explains:
"The success of Kalmar's world-class terminal tractors is the result of its close cooperation with many long-term customers.
"As the logistics business continues to develop, the need for more productive and cost-effective trailer handling solutions becomes evermore critical. By listening to the unique needs of our customers, Kalmar has been able to provide market leading solutions for port, intermodal and distribution applications."
The popularity of Kalmar's terminal tractor has grown more rapidly in recent years. In June 2006, the Ottawa factory produced its 40,000th unit, reinforcing the superiority of Kalmar's offering and its customers' desire to fulfill just-in-time inventory requirements which influenced more rental and fleet sales. It took 41 years to build the first 25,000 units and less than nine years to build the next 20,000 units.
Kalmar also leads in product development
As the worldwide leader in terminal tractor sales offering customers the most comprehensive range of models for heavy industrial applications as well as ports and terminals, Kalmar has driven the product's development to include many industry firsts.
Besides being the original manufacturer of terminal tractors, Kalmar was the first to engineer its machines with automatic transmissions, a rear door entry, integral air conditioning units, power cab tilt and ABS brake systems. Kalmar was also the first to introduce a DOT/EPA certified terminal tractor to the market, a paramount classification for distribution and industrial customers whose operation entails shunting trailers between yards via public streets and roadways.
